How do you say 'Boshamer'? UNC may have it wrong

Posted: Updated:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

There are plenty of fans of the University of North Carolina excited about the Tar Heels' baseball prospects, with the team only two wins from reaching the College World Series.

In fact, fans have packed Boshamer Stadium for recent games as the Tar Heels have made their run.

But what those fans – and even the UNC team and announcers – don't know is they are pronouncing the name of the baseball team's home wrong.

In Chapel Hill, it's commonly pronounced "Bosh-a-mer." The stadium is named for Cary Boshamer, a textile tycoon and UNC alumni who donated the money to build the stadium.

He died with no children the year after it opened – so there was no one around to correct the pronunciation.

On Thursday, his relative, Ulf Boshamer, said he doesn't follow baseball closely and finds the sport too slow. But Ulf Boshamer, who lives near Charlotte, did explain how to pronounce his family's name – and that's "Boss-hammer," and not "Bosh-a-mer."

"There are not many Boshamers left anymore," he said.

But that pronunciation was news to ... well ... pretty much everyone at Carolina.

"That's true?" asked UNC player Michael Russell. "Is this real?"

"No one from the family has ever contacted us that I know of," said Carolina coach Mike Fox.

And baseball play-by-play announcer Dave Nathan said he calls the stadium "Bosh-a-mer" on the air.

So instead of "The Bosh," the stadium could take the nickname "The Boss."

"'The Boss' isn't bad," said Russell, mulling the new pronunciation. "'I'm kind of starting to like it.'"
