DURHAM, N.C. -

Last year Duke Hospital had to turn away more than 900 patients because of lack of capacity. But now, the new Duke Medicine Pavilion is set to open and will provide more space.

The nine-story building has a $596 million price tag, but that price tag comes with 160 beds for critical care and 18 operating rooms.

It also links with the cancer center.

Rooms overlook courtyards and have extra space for equipment and family members.

The Duke Medicine Pavilion was designed with patients and their families in mind.

"They wanted access to natural light," said Dr. Kevin Sowers, president of Duke University Hospital. "They wanted a more pleasant waiting room because many of these folks are sometimes here for a long period of time with us in the intensive care setting, so clearly that became an important part of our design process."

The Duke Medicine Pavilion will open to patients on July 27.

To help celebrate its opening, Duke will be hosting a Community Open House and Health Fair for the public on June 15 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. This event will offer interactive healthy-living activities, including health screenings and risk assessments, nutrition education, exercise demonstrations, CPR training, massage and fun activities for kids.
