RALEIGH, N.C. -

A new restaurant in Raleigh will honor former N.C. State basketball coach Jim Valvano – and give a portion of its earnings to the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

General Manager Jim Herring said Jimmy V's Osteria and Bar officially will open July 23 at a location adjacent to the Sheraton Hotel on Fayetteville Street in Raleigh.

The restaurant, owned by the Northview Hotel Group, will donate 2.5 percent of its revenue to the V Foundation.

Valvano died of cancer in 1993.

"We wanted to do something hip and cool in the city, and of course Raleigh already has a good restaurant culture," Herring said.

He said the group contacted the V Foundation and they were interested.

The restaurant will include some photos of Valvano and references to the famous 1983 N.C. State team that won the national title, including a dish called the "Whittenburger" after guard Dereck Whittenburg.
