NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The State Bureau of Investigation completed their investigation into Lt. Joey LeBlanc, Tuesday, who was fired in June for violating procedures on the handling of drugs in the office.
The case has been turned over to the Attorney General's Special Prosecutor to decide if they will press charges.
A spokesperson for the NC Attorney General's Office confirmed a request by the New Hanover County Sheriff and District Attorney.
Sheriff Ed McMahon held a press conference Tuesday, June 11 to announce a personnel issue within his office.
McMahon said Lt. Joey LeBlanc with the Vice and Narcotics Unit has been fired from the sheriff's office, effective immediately.
Based on a preliminary look, District Attorney Ben David said LeBlanc's actions have impacted several cases, both pending and closed. The district attorney will work with the Public Offender's Office to see the exact total number of cases.
According to McMahon, deputies within the unit reported LeBlanc last month. He said they started to notice irregularities in his actions that led them to question things that had happened a few months ago, so they looked into it further which led to an internal investigation.
According to a disciplinary action charge sheet, LeBlanc was found in violation of "truthfulness; evidence procedures; and drug policy." Basically the lieutenant was fired for violating procedures on the handling of drugs in the office.
LeBlanc worked closely with three senior prosecutors in the DA's Office, who have all been interviewed internal affairs in this case.
According to official documents, LeBlanc received disciplinary action in 2006 for violating standard operating procedures. He was given written reprimand and eight hours administrative leave without pay.
LeBlanc was originally hired in March of 1996 and was promoted to vice detective in 2001, then sergeant in 2005 and lieutenant in the detention division in 2008. He was transferred back to vice in December of 2008.
