HAVELOCK, N.C. -

A Craven County man who barricaded inside his home was taken to the hospital.

For nearly six hours, law enforcement staked outside his house on Ferry Road near Havelock waiting for him to come out.

Firefighters identify the victim as Bernie James George, known by the nickname Popcorn.

Around 9 o'clock, deputies entered the man's home and brought him outside, where he surrendered, according to firefighters.

The standoff started around 3:30 Tuesday afternoon. Sheriff's deputies came to serve involuntary commitment papers and bring the man to the hospital for a mental issue, but he resisted.

"They saw a weapon inside, they backed out, we attempted to contact communication with the victim or subject inside. We've talked to him several times," said Captain Joe Heckman of the Craven County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities say no one was hurt in the incident.
