House considers NC budget again before final vote

RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina House members will get one more chance to praise or pan their state budget proposal before chamber leaders start negotiating a final deal with Senate counterparts.

House Republicans scheduled debate Thursday before the second of two required votes on its spending plan through mid-2015. Lawmakers voted mostly along party lines Wednesday while giving the measure tentative approval.

The plan spends almost $20.6 billion next year, with 56 percent of the money going to the public schools and university and community college systems.

The bill will next return to the Senate, which passed its own budget three weeks ago. The two chambers will set up a conference committee aiming to work out differences and get a final plan to Gov. Pat McCrory by the end of the month.
