GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Greenville police Sunday identified the suspect in a mass shooting at a shopping center as Lakim Anthony Faust, 23, of Greenville.

Faust has been charged with four counts of attempted murder in the shooting of four people in and around a Greenville Walmart Friday morning.

Greenville Police Chief Hassan Aden said police fired on Faust after he turned his weapon on them near Hooker Road. Aden said that the shooter is in custody at Vidant Medical Center.

In a news conference Sunday police said Faust left his apartment Friday morning at 217 Hartford Street "with the intent to inflict mass casualties on innocent people."

A witness said officers kept telling the suspect to stay down and put his hands up. The witness added he was still moving around and police were unable to get to him until they slowly moved in with the SUV and got him in custody.

The shooter was using a "pistol-grip shotgun," Aden said. He also had a bag filled with an unknown amount of ammunition, Aden said.

"He had enough to really do some significant damage," the chief said.

Aden said one person was wounded inside the Kellum Law Firm on Greenville Blvd., while three others shot at the Walmart which is across the street.

The names of the victims and their conditions have not yet been released.

Witnesses say a man in a bullet proof vest walked up and shot an insurance adjustor who was sitting in a car near the Kellum Law Firm. The shooting call came in around 11:45 a.m.

A short time later, emergency crews were dispatched to the side entrance of Walmart near Hooker Road, where a second shooting victim was discovered outside. The victim was described as an older white male.
