A bill requiring North Carolina educators to teach that abortions are linked to later premature births tentatively passed the state House Wednesday. It will get a final vote later this week, then goes back to the Senate for approval and then on to the Governor for his signature.
A House panel made no changes Tuesday to an amended Senate version of the bill.
The measure requires students in grades seven and higher to learn about the risk factors associated with premature birth.
It originally included only abortion but was amended to include other factors such as smoking and inadequate prenatal care.
Supporters and opponents dispute the scientific basis for linking abortion to premature birth.
Opponents have also called the bill a politically motivated effort to rewrite the state's curriculum to support conservative ideology.
Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina said of today's vote:
"The legislation mandates teachers tell students that abortion causes preterm births, a biased opinion that is not supported or recognized by a single national medical association including the American Medical Association, the American Pediatric Society or the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists."
