Hurricanes take Swedish C with 5th pick of draft

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The Carolina Hurricanes have taken Swedish center Elias Lindholm with the fifth pick in the NHL draft.

Lindholm was rated by Central Scouting as the No. 3 European skater in the draft held Sunday.

The 18-year-old had 11 goals and 19 assists in 48 games with Brynas of the Swedish Hockey League.

The Hurricanes entered the draft needing help on defense. They couldn't swing a draft-day trade like they did last year when they acquired forward Jordan Staal from Pittsburgh in exchange for a package headlined by Brandon Sutter.

The Hurricanes went with Lindholm after Seth Jones was taken fourth by Nashville. He's the son of former NBA player Popeye Jones and one of the top defensemen in the draft.
