FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Cumberland County's Veterans Services is moving to a new office in an effort to better serve veterans.

Currently the Veterans Services office is on the basement level of the Department of Social Services building on Ramsey Street. Director Sharon Sanders said her office has grown because of more need from veterans. The seven staff members in the office assist nearly a thousand veterans each month.

"We're beginning to outgrow," Sanders said. "This office has grown tremendously in the last five years with the war and the veterans getting out. Now that they're "rifting" we're getting more veterans here in Cumberland County. So we need more space."

Sanders also said the new location will be more accessible. For example, veterans in wheel chairs, on scooters or using walkers will be able to get into the new office more easily via a ramp that leads to the main entrance.

Right now, veterans can have a long trip across the parking lot, through the lobby of the DSS building and into an elevator to get to the Veterans Services office.

Sanders said the new office also provides more privacy. Each counselor in the office will have an office so veterans can speak freely. Currently counselors work in cubicles.

The new office will be in the county's former Board of Elections office at 301 Russell Street. It is at the Corner of Cool Springs Street near the county courthouse.

Veterans Services will be closed Aug. 2-9 while the department moves into the building. A ribbon cutting is scheduled for Aug. 9 at 2 p.m.

According to the county website, "The Cumberland County Veterans Service Office assists veterans and their dependents obtain benefits to which they are entitled by: submitting claims for benefits to the Department of Veterans Affairs; reviewing and following up on decisions of the Department of Veterans Affairs for fairness and accuracy; and writing and submitting appeals to the Board of Veterans Appeals for disputed decisions."

The services are free to veterans and their dependents.

Anyone who would like more information about how the Veterans Services office helps veterans can attend an informational meeting on Thursday. It is at 6:30 p.m. at the North Regional Branch Library, 855 McArthur Rd.
