You Ask, We Answer: Are gas stations required to post prices near the street?

Posted: Updated:
WINTERVILLE, N.C. -

9 On Your Side has answers after a viewer contacted us asking if gas stations like the Kash and Karry on Highway 11 are required by law to post their gas prices.

So we spoke to Jerry Butler, the Measurement Section Manager in the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. He told us gas stations aren't required to post their prices near the street.

They do, however, have to post prices on the pump and tell you if there's a difference between the price if you're paying cash or credit.

Almost all stations post their prices in other places, but that's because they want you to know the price before you pull in to fill up.

Another question people always ask is, "Is this station price gouging?" However, that question is much more complicated.

If you think a station is price gouging, contact the Attorney General's Office. They'll investigate credible complaints, and if they find cause, they could get you cash refunds.
