Nationwide blood drive to challenge ban on donations from gays

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -

A grassroots effort lead by the gay community will hold a blood drive nationwide, including in Charlotte.

The blood drive is a way to challenge a ban on donations from gay and bi-sexual men by the Food and Drug Administration. The ban was first put in place in 1977 as HIV was first being discovered in the blood supply.

Friday's blood drive will take place in 52 cities across the United States.
