9-year-old girl proves you can do anything if you put your mind to it

Nine-year-old Brittany Apgar says there's two things you should know about her.

"I play baseball. I do not like pink," she says.

The self-proclaimed tomboy is carefree and confident, but says it's taken years to develop her tough skin.

"They laughed at me," she says of meeting her fellow kindergartners for the first time. "They said mean things like, ‘Why is your hand so ugly?' And ‘You're not in the right class, you're supposed to be in the weirdo class.'"

Brittany says bullies targeted her because she was born without any fingers on her right hand. It's the result of a birth defect called Hypoplasia. She's had 10 surgeries to re-grow four of her fingers, and while it's helped, she's still without a fully-functional hand.

"I just had to deal with it," she says. "I learned to be tough like my dad. You just drown out the negative and put in the positive."

It's that can-do attitude that landed her a spot on an all-boys baseball team.

She holds her own, but is now leveling the playing field again thanks to a donation from the Shriner's Hospitals for Children.

Her prosthetic hand opens and closes when she moves her opposite shoulder and comes with a specially-made attachment that grips a baseball bat.

"She inspires me on a daily basis," her father, Tom Apgar, says, "by not giving up and overcoming every challenge. Now with this device, she's been able to hit the ball with a lot more power and drive it through the infield."

Brittany is hopeful it will help her score her first homerun and show all her bullies she's not letting anything hold her back.

"Yeah, times can be tough," she says. "But it doesn't mean that you're nobody. You have to be somebody."
