Maynard Children's Hospital staff ticketed by 'Hallway Patrol'

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Nurses and doctors at the Maynard Children's Hospital in Greenville got tickets all morning!

The Junior Hallway Patrol was out in full force Thursday. Kids monitored the halls, making sure the staff weren't "texting while walking" or making other violations.

The patients got to ride around in a special Highway Patrol wheelchair, decked out with lights and sirens. They even got their very own Highway Patrol badge and hat.

If someone was ticketed in the halls, they had to pay up with a sweet treat of the junior trooper's choosing.

"We try to get kids that are sick out of bed and out of their room and get them to get a little exercise and get interaction with troopers and law enforcement officers which they usually don't get a chance to do here at the hospital," said NC Trooper Brian Lane.

As a child, Trooper Lane spent time in the UNC Children's Hospital undergoing surgery for a birth defect, Pectus Excavatum. He says it was visitors who always made him feel better.

He's conducted the Junior Hallway Patrol program at UNC, Duke and now Vidant Medical Center.
