BOSTON -

The Massachusetts police officer who took photographs that were released Thursday of Boston bombing suspect Dzokhar Tsarnaev was reportedly relieved of his duties.

Boston Magazine was the first outlet to publish the new photographs of the surviving marathon bombing suspect emerging from his hiding place on April 19, when he was captured by police.

The photographs, taken by Sgt. Sean Murphy, a Massachusetts State Police tactical photographer, show a bloodied Tsarnaev getting out of a boat with a sniper's laser trained on his forehead.

Murphy was outraged by the recent Rolling Stone cover, according to Boston Magazine, and he said he wanted to send a different message.

Late Thursday, Boston Magazine reported that Murphy had been relieved of his duties and his gun pending a hearing next week and ordered not to talk to the media. NBC News was not able to immediately verify this report, and calls for comment to the Massachusetts State Police were not returned.
