PINEHURST, N.C. -

A teenager died early Thursday morning after being hit by car on U.S. 15/501 just outside the city of Pinehurst.

Highway patrol responded to a collision involving a pedestrian just before 5:15 a.m. on U.S. 15/501 near Boit Gilmore Lane.

Troopers says a 2009 Nissan Altima was traveling north on the highway when the driver noticed two teens standing in the road. The driver, 42-year-old William Mullen, swerved to avoid hitting a 15-year-old, but unfortunately struck the second teen, 17-year-old Timothy Jeremiah Reeder of Southern Pines.

Based on the preliminary investigation, charges are not expected to be filed against the driver of the Altima.

Speed and alcohol were not factors in the accident.
