Need for affordable housing exceeds supply in Durham

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Durham County had to make budget cuts and now there's concern about what will ultimately be impacted. Not just now, but years down the road.

County commissioners cut $84,000 from the city-county planning department.

"Durham CAN," which stands for Durham Congregations, Associations and Neighborhoods, is worried the county will delay planning areas for affordable housing.

Durham CAN said with a new light rail planned for the area, property values will go up. And if the city and county don't plan for affordable housing now, it may make it difficult for such housing to be built in the future.

Ryan Fehrman is the executive director of Genesis Home, a group that works to find affordable housing for those in need.

"The reality is right now the demand for affordable housing far exceeds our local supply and the Triangle is a growing community, so with more and more people coming in," Fehrman said.  "I personally believe that situation is going to get worse as you have more folks competing for the same number of affordable housing units."

The planning commission meets next week.

Its members will weigh in on whether to change the department's work plan as a result of the loss of money.

Members of Durham CAN are expected to attend.

The meeting is next Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at Durham City Hall.
