Final NC Tax Free weekend underway

Posted: Updated:
NEW BERN, N.C. -

It's a good day to start back-to-school shopping.

The annual three-day sales tax holiday, where shoppers don't pay taxes on a number of items, begins Friday and runs through the weekend.

And you better get your money's worth, because this will likely be the last tax-free weekend in North Carolina. The new state budget eliminates the holiday.

It's expected to cost the state more than $13 million this year.

"Tax free weekend is definitely a savings. And you're telling me they're not going to do it after this year? That's going to be a bit more planning on our part," said Becky Malek, a shopper at the New Bern Mall.

Jordan Shaw, spokesperson for Thom Tillis, North Carolina speaker of the house, says that by not having a sales tax holiday anymore, the state will be able to lower corporate and personal income taxes.

"From our perspective, instead of having one weekend where we have no sales tax, we feel that the tax reform plan we put in place puts more dollars in the pockets of hard working North Carolinians," said Shaw.

The budget also eliminates the Energy Star sales tax holiday. Its final run is in November, when items like refrigerators and air conditioners are tax free.

As for this weekend, here's a look at tax free items:

  •      Clothing, footwear, and school supplies, under $100
  •      Sports and recreation equipment, under $50
  •      Computers under $3,500 and computer equipment under $250

For a complete list of items exempted from sales tax from August 2 to August 4, check out the North Carolina Department of Revenue's list: http://www.dornc.com/taxes/sales/holiday_exempt.pdf
