A new tampon ad featuring a 12-year-old girl is creating a discussion among parents and women.

The new video advertisement is for a company called "Hello Flo." While the ad is geared toward all women, it is focused on girls who are about to get their period and who have recently gotten their first period.

The two minute commercial shows a young girl at camp who gets her "red badge of courage." The young girl takes charge, helping other girls learn about their periods. In the ad the girl refers to herself as the "camp gyno," telling other girls "this is life now."

The commercial is a deviation from typical marketing, which feature woman in their 20's and 30's.

Most tampon ads stay away from showing the product, while the Hello Flo one shows the girl holding it by the string while inside her camp cabin.

Since being posted online on July 28, it has been viewed more than 3.5 million times.

Reaction to the ad has sparked discussion over the message the ad is trying to send.
