New fees for Chapel Hill transit park and ride lots go into effect Thursday

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

Drivers in Chapel Hill who park at the Chapel Hill park and ride lots will begin paying fees on Thursday.

The fees will be effective at the following park and ride lots: Carrboro Plaza, Eubanks, Southern Village and Jones Ferry.

The daily rate is $2, or drivers can opt to pay a monthly rate of $21 or a yearly rate of $250,

Monthly and annual permits for the park and ride lots can be found on the Town of Chapel Hill website.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will also be implementing fees for its park and ride permits on Thursday, Aug. 15. UNC park and ride permits will also be honored in town lots. For more information on UNC park and ride permits, click here.

The new fees will cost the town $128,000 to make improvements such as install signs and pay stations.

This year and each year after there will be an estimated cost of $69,000 for things such as maintenance and paying parking attendants.

The director of Chapel Hill Transit, Brian Litchfield, said one reason for the fees is because UNC Chapel Hill recently starting charging for riders to park in its park and ride lots. So to prevent the town's lots from being over-run with cars parking for free, the transit system put a similar fee in place for the town park and ride lots.

Also, he said its been more challenging in recent years to find enough resources for the transit service, which is a shared venture between UNC, the town of Chapel Hill and the town of Carrboro.

Leaders in the town of Chapel Hill recently approved a one cent property tax increase to go toward the transit program, Litchfield said.

In the Southern Village lot, 100 percent of the 400 spaces are used on a daily average.

In the Jones Ferry lot, about 240 of the 443 spaces are used each day. 

In the Carrboro Plaza lot, about 132 of the 145 spaces are used in a daily average. 

And the Eubanks Road lot usually had about 350 of the 395 spaces filled.
