McCrory asks public's help to preserve NC vetoes

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory is urging the public to help him preserve a pair of vetoes he issued this week on legislation related to immigration and welfare benefits.

His office released a video featuring McCrory explaining why he formally blocked two bills from taking effect. One would have required drug testing for some applicants for welfare benefits. The other would have expanded the exemption for employers required to use the E-Verify identification system for temporary workers.

McCrory asks citizens in the video released Thursday night to call their lawmakers, ask them to go along with his vetoes and send him better legislation. The House and Senate both passed the bills last month by veto-proof margins. McCrory must call the General Assembly by early September to consider the vetoes.
