Charlotte is asking a judge to issue an order against a gang.
The order being sought Thursday under a new North Carolina law is designed to prevent known gang members from associating with each other in public.
But the American Civil Liberties Union says it will monitor the proceeding against The Hidden Valley Kings.
Police say the gang dominates the north Charlotte neighborhood where it gets its name.
Police in other states say the legal maneuver has reduced gang activities.
But some judges have rejected the injunctions and are considering doing so in other states.
ACLU attorney Paul Pinto says there are other ways police could deal with gang without restricting activities that are not illegal.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe says the goal is to limit gang activity.
