HENDERSON, N.C. -

A backlog of murder cases in the Vance County court system has a judge there taking action.

The county has a backlog of 25 murder cases dating back to 2009, Henderson's Daily Dispatch reports. Judge Robert Hobgood said he could utilize courtrooms and juries in neighboring counties to clear that backlog.

"In the interest of justice, I don't believe that justice is being served when you have a murderer, or a person that's charged with murder, waiting that long to go to trial," Henderson City Councilor Sara Coffey said.

Hobgood has said the situation is alarming, noting that neighboring Warren County only has two pending murder cases.

Meanwhile, the family of a Henderson man who was murdered in February says the backlog is "pitiful." Jerome Kearney, 33, was gunned down outside a Henderson Motel.

His aunt, Sarah Lewis, spoke with WNCN on Thursday.

"It's like you have nothing to look forward to when you come to court," said Sarah Lewis, Kearney's aunt.
