Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Durham school buses were "generally on time" Monday, the Durham Public Schools said students returned for the first day of school.

Durham officials said there were 260 buses on the road Monday, and that they "were generally on time considering normal first-day-of-school operations."

New magnet programs, enhanced middle schools and newly renovated campuses greeted many Durham Public Schools students as they arrived for the start of the 2013-14 traditional school year.

"I have seen evidence everywhere I looked that our teachers and school administrators were prepared for the first day," said Superintendent Eric J. Becoats, who toured schools and met with participants in the national Million Fathers March Monday. "Our parents are engaged, our children are excited, and the excitement is catching. This is going to be a great school year."

On the 20th day of classes, when official count is taken, district-wide enrollment is expected to be greater than 32,000 students.

On Monday, more than 174 fathers, male caregivers and role models went to Hillside High as part of the national Million Fathers March and pledged to volunteer for 10 or more hours this school year.
