Craigslist ad causes Pinellas County man grief

Posted: Updated:
PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

Charter fishing boat captain T.J. Luger's cell phone is blowing up. But it's not from people wanting him to take them out fishing on his boat, the Parabellum.

"Hey. Do you still have the Chevy Impala for sale? I'm like, what Chevy Impala? Like 15 hundred dollars. Impala, is it an impala or a caprice?" said Luger.

Some callers ask him to snap a picture of the inside of the car. Others send a text asking for details. Luger traced all the madness to a Craigslist ad out of St. Petersburg. To be clear, he doesn't have a Chevy for sale.

"And this goes on to 2, 3, 4 in the morning. Text messages on top of it," said Luger.

About 150 calls later, after trying to contact Craigslist and having a Pinellas Sheriff's deputy tell him, to change the number, Luger sent an email to 8 On Your Side.

"You can't talk to somebody at Craigslist, so I sent them an email. Somebody named Susan responded with one line, saying it appears the post was moved last night," Luger said. "My cell phone was so tied up, I couldn't even keep it charged enough to deal with the volume of calls I was getting."

His cell phone is his life line. The number is plastered on his SUV. It's how he lines up fishing business. His frustration is bubbling over.

"There needs to be somebody to answer a human or send a human an email," said Luger. "Not all this automated stuff. There needs to be a person involved because, I was coming unglued."

Since the Craigslist ad is off the web, Luger's phone has settled down. But the fiasco is an example of an automated world that affects real people.
