RALEIGH, N.C. -

If there is one band at Hopscotch that can appreciate serendipity, it is Company (or "Co." as it is also commonly known). After all, they wouldn't be playing in Raleigh this weekend without it.

A while back, the Charleston, S.C., band did a Shuffle Magazine interview with Hopscotch Music Festival curator, Grayson Currin. At the time, the band had no idea who they were talking to, and it wasn't until months later that they figured out they had an "in" with one of the biggest festivals in the Southeast.

"I didn't even realize he was the director of Hopscotch," said Co. lead singer and guitar player Brian Hannon. "I asked him, 'Can we play Hopscotch?' and he said, 'Of Course.'"

Aside from SXSW, Co. has never played a festival quite like Hopscotch, and Hannon says it's "a huge honor" to be on the schedule this year.

He opened up their Thursday night set with a heartfelt thanks to the packed house at the Berkeley Cafe: "I know there's a million killer bands tonight, but you're hanging with us."

Co. plays catchy tunes with catchy lyrics, and their set had the room revved up from the get-go.

The band's make up includes electric and acoustic guitars, drums, and bass on every song, with its fifth member bouncing back and forth between keys and a lap steel. It all adds up to an upbeat band that occasionally reminds you of poppy 90's alternative or punk, but Hannon's earnest vocals keep it anchored with a decidedly indie nuance.

"We're like Magnolia Electric Co., but minus the Magnolia and Electric," Hannon said. "We wish we were Magnolia Electric Co."

"Do you want me to print that?" I asked.

"Go for it," he said.

Throw in a healthy sense of humor, and you start rooting for Company to have more serendipitous encounters in their future.
