2 brothers charged in death of pregnant woman

Posted: Updated:
LENOIR, N.C. -

Two brothers are charged with causing the death of a 27-year-old pregnant woman who crashed into a trailer carrying tree-cutting equipment.

The News-Topic of Lenoir reports Saturday that 22-year-old Tyler Whitener Jr. and 26-year-old Michael Whitener, both of Maiden, are charged with involuntary manslaughter in the July 18 wreck that killed Ashley Watson of Lenoir.

The brothers were driving separate vehicles on U.S. 321 in Gastonia. Each was hauling a trailer.

The state Highway Patrol says Watson couldn't see Tyler Whitener's trailer until she nearly ran into it, because his lights were out at 10 p.m.

When she swerved to avoid that trailer, her pickup ran into Michael Whitener's trailer.

Watson's 6-year-old daughter and 11-year-old niece in the truck with her were uninjured. She was nine weeks pregnant.
