Chapel Hill looking to expand Rosemary Street

Posted: Updated:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

When it comes to grabbing something to eat or drink in Chapel Hill, many people head directly for Franklin Street.

But, the town wants to change that and give people another road with places to eat, drink, shop and live.

A meeting Tuesday night was aimed at having the public pitch ideas about what they think Rosemary Street should look like in the coming years.

Previous meetings have resulted in ideas such as a better layout for biking, walking and driving.

There's already a business incubator with startups, called Launch Chapel Hill, and the new plan could include trying to retain some of them along Rosemary Street.

"It's a very fragmented street. There are some blocks that look like they belong to the neighborhood. There are some blocks that look like they belong to downtown," said Dwight Bassett, an economic development officer for the Town of Chapel Hill. "We realized that it was a great secondary corridor for creating commerce in downtown."

The next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 2.

The town council could adopt a plan from those ideas early next year.
