Ex-Eagle scout arrested in Cary bank robbery

CARY, N.C. -

A Cary man who was a former Eagle Scout and chemical engineering student at N.C. State University now faces charges for robbing a Cary bank.

Andrew Bajerski, 23, of Murray Glen Drive has been arrested and charged with felony armed robbery, Cary Police said Wednesday morning.

He faces a penalty of up to 13 years in jail and is currently being held at the Wake County Public Safety Center.

It marked the third bank robbery in Cary this year. In January, the SunTrust on Harrison Avenue was robbed, and an arrest was made. In June, the Vantage South Bank on High House Road was robbed by two men. No arrest has been made in that case, when two men robbed the bank in hoods and black robes.

Bajerski hardly appears to fit the common expectation of a bank robber. He earned his Eagle scout award in 2006. His LinkedIn profile said he attended Enloe High School, which attracts many of Wake County's top students.

It also lists him as an chemical engineering major at N.C. State.

But Capt. Don Hamilton of the Cary Police said Bajerski also has a criminal past as well as a record of achievements. Records show Bajerski was convicted of two breaking and entering charges in March of 2013. Hamilton also said Bajerski has a pending DWI charge from Oct. 2012 and pending drunk and disorderly charge in Wake County.

The robbery happened Tuesday morning, when a young white male in a baseball cap and sun glasses entered the Fifth Third Bank at 7210 Tryon Road.

The man suggested he had a gun, fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. No one was injured, and only bank employees were in the building at the time of the incident.

"We want to express our appreciation to the bank employees and security officers," said Hamilton said. "This case was solved so quickly largely because of the excellent cooperation between the staff and our officers."

Police said the investigation continues and anyone with additional information is encourage to contact the Town of Cary Police Department at (919) 469-4012 or Cary Crime Stoppers at (919) 226-CRIM(E).
