ETSU daycare center on probation for supervision violations

Posted: Updated:
JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) -

A daycare center run by East Tennessee State University's Department of Education is on probation with the state for leaving children alone and unsupervised, according to a Notice of Probation issued Tuesday by the Tennessee Department of Human Services.

News Channel 11 obtained a copy of the notice that went to the ETSU Child Study Center in Johnson City.

In the notice are allegations that on two separate occasions in 2013, a child was left unsupervised on the playground for one minute at the center.

The first incident happened on June 25th, and the second incident happened on August 29th.

A spokesperson for ETSU, Joe Smith, said the school self-reported the violations and is taking them very seriously.

"What we can guarantee is that we are committed to their safety, we can guarantee we are committed to their education, and we can also guarantee we are going to look at this very very closely and see what changes need to be made in the future," said Smith.

If there are no further violations in the sixty days after the notice was issued, the notice of probation will be lifted.

Smith confirmed this is not the first time an ETSU child care facility has been on probation with the state.

Last year, the Little Buccaneers Early Childhood Laboratory Program was also placed on probation with the state for two instances of children being left unsupervised.

That facility is no longer on probation.
