ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -

A transgender student at Edgecombe Community College said constant harassment, bullying and death threats have forced her to consider dropping out of school.  Now, she wants colleges to enact tought anti-bullying policies.

Vishon Murphy was born a man but now identifies herself as a woman.  Her new name is Jasmine.

"I plan on having surgery to get a whole process done because I want to be a woman," Murphy said.

The process of becoming Jasmine is something not everyone at Edgecombe Community College understands. Murphy said that ignorance has led to threats against her life.

"Numerous people have threatened to kill me. Someone has actually tried to attack me and I had to run," Murphy said. "People have thrown things at me.  Someone even spit at me."

Murphy said she has complained numerous times to school administrators at Edgecombe Community College but she said their response has been slow.

A spokesperson for the college said the school doesn't condone harassment of any kind. The student code of conduct bans "verbal, physical, or psychological abuse, threats, intimidation, harassment, coercion,and/or other conduct, including but not limited to stalking or bullying, in person or by electronic means, which threatens bodily harm to self or another person or persons in the College community or endangers the health or safety of any person."  A student found guilty could face disciplinary sanctions, the handbook states.

Murphy wants the school to do more to protect its students from harassment.

"I want the school to have an anti-bullying policy," Murphy said.  "I want them to have zero-tolerance for bullying.

"This is who I am," she said. "I'm happy with myself and I wish people would understand this is the type of person that I am and they shouldn't torture and harass me."
