Only on 9: Commissioner kicked out of jail

WASHINGTON, N.C. -

Cameras rolled last week as a group of county officials toured the Beaufort County Jail---it's the last tour offered before it reopened to inmates.

During that meeting, Commissioner Hood Richardson and Sheriff Alan Jordan argued over the amount of inmates the jail could house. The confrontation came to a head when the sheriff chose to call Richardson “a slang word for a rectum”.

In an article published in the Beaufort Observer, Richardson said he was forcibly removed from the jail. The surveillance video clearly shows the sheriff signaling his deputies to restrain and remove him.

“What he was doing was illegal. It was an assault.” Richardson said.

“Commissioner Richardson seems to think he's in charge of everything. As an elected official or constitutional officer, I don't have to tolerate that and I don't intend to. As long as I’m sheriff he never has and never will run the sheriff's office.” Jordan replied.

Richardson says he had the right to be in the jail and feels like it is his obligation to protect the people’s money.

At this time, Richardson hasn’t filed and charges but did say the county commission held a special meeting. He says the commissioners directed the county attorney to draft a letter to the Sheriff asking him to allow commissioners to do their job.

We’ll have more when it becomes available.
