Gun raffle rakes in $10,000 for Wilson Co. elementary school

Posted: Updated:

A gun raffle that sparked a bit of controversy brought in a total of $10,030 for a Wilson County elementary school.

Like many schools, Lucama Elementary is facing a tighter budget.

On Saturday, the school hosted "Lucama Fun Fest" as a way to bring the community together and raise money. The school said the money raised will help fund field trips and technology in the classrooms.

The Sanoca Southern Gentleman chapter of the Delta Waterfowl Foundation came up with a unique way to help.

The group raffled off a rifle, giving all the funds collected from ticket sales to Lucama Elementary.

"We were planning on selling 50 tickets, hoping for $100 maybe, and it blew up," said Ryan Beamon with Delta Waterfowl.

Some people didn't like the idea of associating a gun raffle with an elementary school.

The school superintendent approved the idea as long as the gun never touched school property. During "Fun Fest," raffle tickets for the rifle were sold across the street.

The gun was not there.

The winner of the rifle was Danny Whitley. Shortly after the drawing, the school was presented with a check for $10,030.

"It means the world to us," said Beamon.

The Delta Waterfowl Club is hosting a family-friendly fundraising banquet November 16th at the Wilson Moose Lodge.
