WWII veteran flies again in real B-17

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, N.C. -

A B-17 bomber brought memories of World War II to North Carolina on Monday, taking media - and one special guest - on a flight to share a sense of what the war was like for American bomber crews.

One veteran, 91-year-old George Parrish of the Triad, was on the flight and recalled how he used to man the guns during World War II.

Parrish was a flight engineer and top turret gunner on B-17s during the war.

The B-17 that flew in Burlington Monday was used in the 1990 "Memphis Belle" movie and remains painted with the insignia of the famous aircraft.

The real Memphis Belle is in Dayton, Ohio, and remains one of the war's most famous aircrafts after flying dozens of bombing missions over Germany. The Memphis Belle was the first U.S. plane to fly 25 bombing runs without losing a single crew member.

The captain of the Memphis Belle in World War II, by the way, was Robert Knight Morgan of Asheville. He named the plane for his girlfriend. He died in 2004 and is buried in Black Mountain.

The public can view the plane in Burlington Saturday and Sunday and the public can make a 45-minute flight for $450.
