Pinellas jury finds Jennifer Mee guilty of 1st Degree Murder

Posted: Updated:
PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

A Pinellas County jury has found Jennifer Mee , known as the 'hiccup girl' guilty of 1st Degree Murder

The 22-year-old was seen pinching herself throughout the trial Friday, although it was not clear why.

As a 15-year-old, Mee gained national attention with a case of hiccups that would not stop.

She even appeared on NBC's Today show to talk about the hiccups, but what may have seemed like an amusing oddity then has now turned into a serious case involving robbery and murder.

In 2010, Mee was arrested for her involvement in the death of 22 year old Shannon Griffin.

Prosecutors say Mee is the mastermind behind setting up the robbery of Griffin by luring him to her apartment to buy marijuana.

Investigators say Mee intended for Griffin to be robbed by her boyfriend and co-defendant, LaRon Raiford and Lamont Newton.

Prosecutors say Griffin was robbed and shot four times and killed.

In closing arguments on Friday, prosecutors played a recording from a jailhouse conversation between Mee and her mother.

During the conversation Mee told her Mother, "I set the whole thing up."

During his closing arguments,  Mee's defense attorney John Trevena, told jurors not to focus on that part of the recording.

Instead, Trevena pointed to another part of the conversation, saying Mee also told her mother, "I didn't kill anybody, I didn't know this was going to happen."

However, under Florida law, if the jury finds Mee was involved in the robbery, they can also find her guilty of first degree murder.
