Durham mother robbed at gunpoint while children slept

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

A Durham woman said two men covering their faces broke into her home Wednesday morning and robbed her at gunpoint.

Michelle Garcia was at home with four children Wednesday when two men broke into her home through her dining room window around 6:30 a.m.

Garcia, who lives in the 300 block of Dacian Ave., said both men were brandishing guns.

One of them, she said, held a gun to her head asked,"Where is the stash of money at?" When she told them she didn't have any, the men began rummaging through her home.

She said the men took a television from her son's room, an Xbox, a digital camera, a bank card, her cell phone and her card.

Garcia said the men told her they would leave the cell phone outside when they left, which they did. Her car was recovered a few blocks away from the home.

Garcia said the 5-year-old and newborn slept through the robbery, but the 10- and 2-year-olds woke up when she screamed.

"I was scared more for the kids," Garcia said.

She said there have been a number of break-ins into cars in the year that she and her husband, Carlos Caballero, have lived in their home, but never into their actual house.

Caballero said he isn't concerned about what was stolen, only that his wife and children are safe.

"I don't really worry about those types of things. I don't care if we find the car or not -- we have another one. ... We can get those things back sooner or later," Caballero said. "I just worry about my kids and wife."

He said he plans to add a camera at their home to "make sure it is safe."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (919) 683-1200.
