Tampa native on Voice shocked by Levine's 'priceless' reaction

Posted: Updated:

The Tampa native whose voice caused an elated Adam Levine to do push-ups and grab her in a hug is flying high after last week's show.

Donna Allen's rendition of Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful" caused Christina Aguilera and Levine to turn their chairs around in an attempt to coach her this season on the NBC show "The Voice."

"When that first chair turned around - it was Christina. When she turned around I said 'oh my God!' I was excited," Allen said. "So I wanted to continue to project ... my voice so that someone else would turn around and Adam turned around. I was in heaven after that."

She's been wanting to try out for 3 years and always said she'd pick Levine if it happened. That's exactly what she did in an attempt to blend rock 'n roll, which she loves, with her R&B background.

"I'm excited about him and I thank God for him - I do," Donna said. "His reaction was priceless when I chose him - it was crazy."

Allen, who turned 55 on Sep. 8, is the oldest contestant on the show but she feels like it was exactly supposed to play out that way.

"Wherever we are - there's where we're supposed to be...in the moment," she said back at home in south Florida. "I'm going to take this and enjoy my life and enjoy the ride."

Throughout her life, Allen has broken ground in different ways. She was the first black homecoming queen at Chamberlain High School and also broke the color barrier on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleading squad. She has since moved to the Miami area but still has family in the Bay area, including her twin sister Denise.

Donna didn't really start singing until she turned 18 when her friend Ruby Baker fell in love and asked her to be her replacement in her band.

From there, Donna moved to Miami Beach where she produced her first album in 1986 and sang background for Jon Secada and Gloria Estafan in the 90s.

Donna stopped touring when she was pregnant so she could raise her son, Marcus.

"I wanted to hear him speak his first word and see him ... take his first step," she said.

Marcus is now 17 as he watched his mom take the stage and, for the first time in front of a national audience, sing the lead on such a large stage.

"I just want to show people that whatever you believe in - whatever your goals are - whatever you are great at because God has given each and every one of us have talent - great talents," Donna said. "We have to manifests those talents - use it for the good."

You can watch "The Voice" on Mondays and Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. on WFLA NewsChannel 8.
