Tampa hip hat store helps chemo patients

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Women undergoing chemotherapy now have a unique way to deal with hair loss, especially in a hot weather climate, thanks to Tampa's Hip Hats with Hair.

"The hair is attached to a thin fabric which is a 'Coolmax' fabric it's a sports wickaway fabric and nothing touches your head except for the soft fabric," said Christine Heinen, the founder and creator of Hip Hats with Hair.

Heinen worked as a volunteer at Moffitt Cancer Center in the wig department and realized many women had scalp sensitivity. Combined with a hot weather climate, that makes full wigs be too itchy and uncomfortable to wear.

Using a hybrid hair blend of human hair and high temperature synthetic hair, Hip Hats with Hair can be styled with heat. Some designs are durable enough to swim in.

"This one actually goes under water," Heinen said.

From hair color to style women can have their Hip Hats with Hair tailor made, and many opt to send in their own hair before losing it to chemotherapy.

"We can actually make hats, scarves, and caps using a woman's hair, and people don't even realized they ever lost it," Heinen said.
