LOUISBURG, N.C. -

An elderly woman from Louisburg was assaulted Monday on her family's farm during an attempted break-in.

Authorities said the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. Monday near Moulton Road.

The victim said she heard a vehicle pull up to her farm, so she grabbed a handgun from her home and drove up to the farm area.

When she pulled up on her farm, the vehicle sped away, leaving behind a suspect.

The suspect started to run away and the woman began to chase him in her golf cart, police said.

The victim was able to get close to the suspect and she asked what he was doing. At that point, the suspect allegedly pulled the woman off the golf cart and threw her to the ground.

"I just said to him, I said, 'Do not kill me. Please don't kill me,'" the woman, who asked not to be identified, said. "I'm still in a lot of shock and shaky from it."

While on the ground, she managed to fire her .22 pistol, scaring off the suspect. Neighbors heard the gunshot and called the sheriff's office, which had no luck conducting an extensive air and ground search of the 150-acre farm for the suspect.

"We've put out an alert about what has happened and have a lot of tips coming in," Sheriff Jerry Jones said.

The sheriff's office also responded to a break-in attempt earlier Monday near Louisburg. In that incident, a woman was home alone and reported to authorities that three young black men tried to break into her home.
