School bus, van collide in Wayne County

Posted: Updated:
GOLDSBORO, N.C. - Six students were taken to the hospital Friday morning after their school bus was involved in a collision with a van.

It happened early Friday morning at the intersection of U.S. 70 and S Beston Road east of Goldsboro just after 7 a.m.

Eleven students were on the bus heading to Eastern Wayne High School when the accident happened. The five students not transported to the hospital were released to their parents. The bus driver wasn’t seriously hurt.

David Lewis with Wayne County Public Schools said the bus was coming south on Beston Road and was turning onto eastbound U.S. 70 when the collision occurred.

A clerk at the Handy Mart located near the intersection said it appeared the driver of the van was badly injured. Emergency responders had to use the jaws of life to extract him from the vehicle.

The clerk added the front end of the van was crushed and the motor was inside the car. Authorities wouldn’t confirm that.

The condition of the van’s driver hasn’t been released.

Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident.
