FWC launches track-a-black-bear page

Posted: Updated:
If you spot a Florida black bear while hiking, bird-watching or simply on your back porch, you can now report the sighting on a special Web page and become a citizen scientist, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced Friday.

FWC officers said it is challenging for their scientists to track the species because the Florida's largest mammal roams over large areas. They hope that having more people report the sightings will help update the state's bear map. Researchers are particularly interested in tracking mother bears with cubs.

FWC warn not to approach the animals or try to touch them.

FWC officials also reminded the fall season is when bears need to eat the most to get ready for winter, that's why residents have to make sure their trash, pet food and bird seed are properly stored. Officials recommend using bear-proof garbage cans or rolling the garbage out the day of pick-up.

If you see a bear, you can report it here.
