Hillsborough Animal Services: adopted dog euthanized by mistake

Posted: Updated:
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Hillsborough Animal Services Director Ian Hallett describes what happened at the animal shelter on Tuesday as tragic. JoJo, a 1-year-old male German Shepherd was mistakenly euthanized just hours before his adoptive family was supposed to pick him up.

"Making a mistake like this is tragic because it goes against everything we're trying to do," said Hallett.

Hallett says the department is investigating how and why this happened. He says the investigation is almost complete, and it looks like the mistake boils down to human error.

"The procedures that we have in place as safeguards, to make sure an animal is not accidentally put down were not followed," said Hallett.

He says disciplinary action against those involved could result in suspension or even termination.

"We euthanize about 12,000 animals right now, accidents can happen, however, in a job, this is one of the most critical functions that we have, and when you have a critical function, those are the ones you pay the most attention to, so we do not tolerate errors in this area," said Hallett.

Satish Thakre of Tampa was the man who was slated to adopt JoJo. Reached by phone, he said he was very disappointed at what happened.
