Hillsborough residents talk trash about trash pickup

Posted: Updated:

Hillsborough County leaders urged citizens to talk trash about the new trash cans and trash pickup system, and a number of them are. They called 8 On Your Side, complaining of late trash pickup. Some said there was no pickup at all. Kim Byer is the County's Solid Waste Transition Manager, and has heard them all. "We have had a few complaints about the private roads, we're working through each of those private road issues individually," said Byer. "Some may have low hanging trees or low hanging wires. So they're presenting some access issues with the franchise collectors, so we're working with the franchise collectors to get those taken care of."

Byer says workers are getting used to the new trucks and adjusted routes. That is, in some cases, delaying pickup. "The routes are totally different," said Byer. "So someone who might have been working a private road in Plant City, now it's a new driver, its Republic and they haven't gone down some of those roads. So that might be new for them."

Several residents who called News Channel 8 are disabled. They say the new trash cans are too big and bulky and impossible for them to take to the curb. Byer says, that is not a problem. "Those handicapped folks can apply for a disability back door service. That's a service that's free of charge. The haulers will actually come to their back door and get their trash for them and take it in and out for them. "The county does require the disabled to fill out a form and provide a doctor’s note proving they are disabled.

Several of the residents who contacted 8 On Your Side said the county had resolved their issues.
