Corn mazes in Hernando County offer a taste of northern tradition

MASARYKTOWN, FL (WFLA) -

Covering five acres on a farm in Hernando County is a maze of corn that towers over those who enter. This is the seventh year the maze has been created at Sweetfields Farm, which changes in design each season. Lisa Kessel and her husband own the farm. Kessel says the design, which includes a pig, keyboards and musical notes was influenced by what is happening in their family's life.

"We had some additions to our pigs, so we have a pig in our maze and then also, we're firm believers that music can play a lot in emotion and how you're feeling and also in how your plants grow out here," Kessel said.

On Monday, students from Countryside Montessori Academy took a field trip to the farm.

Sara Holt says bringing her daughter to the farm was a reminder of when she was a child.

"It's quite an experience. Most of us aren't from Florida as parents so to have your kids be able to see of the stuff you got to do as children has been fantastic," Holt said.

Some of the activities the children took part in besides walking the corn maze included rolling pumpkins, taking a hay ride and watching pig races.

Not far away from this farm, a new corn maze has sprouted up.

Demetrios Falakos owns the farm. Creating a maze is new to him and he says it came with plenty of challenges.

"[We] put the well in for irrigation. All that fun stuff, planted the corn. I believe it was august 17 we got it in so two, two and a half weeks we put it all in," Falakos said.

At Harvest Moon Farm, they've incorporated technology to help people get through the maze by using a smart phone.

Throughout the five acre maze there are QR signs. Guests scan the signs and answer questions to find out which way to go.

Falakos hopes he has a successful season so he can do it again next year.
