E-mails reveal more about man killed by Charlotte police

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -

One month after Jonathan Ferrell was shot and killed, internal emails sent to and by Chief Rodney Monroe are being released.

NBC Charlotte has also obtained the initial crash report.

According to that report, Ferrell, crashed the car he was driving after running off the road and hitting some trees. The report omits information about original and impact speed, noting the ongoing investigation.

Early reports indicated Ferrell climbed out of the back window of the car and banged on the door of a nearby home.

That homeowner called police to report what she thought was someone trying to get into her house.

Police arrived on scene, one officer attempted to use his taser on Ferrell, but it failed. CMPD says Officer Randall Kerrick shot Ferrell 10 times.

The 24-year-old died on scene. He was unarmed.

Kerrick was charged with voluntary manslaughter the next day. Kerrick's attorney has said his client's actions were justified.

Emails to and from Chief Monroe in the hours after the shooting consisted mostly of press releases and offers of assistance or condolences from community leaders.

The Ferrell family's attorney requested more than a dozen pieces of evidence including Kerrick's job application, as well as video and audio from the shooting scene.

CMPD officials told Chief Monroe not all of those requests were public information.

No word on which requests have been filled at this time.
