FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

A Fort Bragg soldier and his wife have been charged with child abuse and contributing to a juvenile being neglected after an investigation by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Michael Walden, 46, and Jennifer Walden, 41, both of 2724 Bardolino Drive, were taken into custody Wednesday.

The investigation showed that on Sept. 25, 2013, the couple left their 14-year-old son in charge of their 8-year-old daughter while they spent five days in New Orleans to celebrate their anniversary.

The children had no adult supervision and were responsible for caring for themselves the entire time their parents were gone.

School officials became suspicious when teachers were told the parents were not at home. They then contacted authorities.

The Walden's have been released from the Cumberland County Detention Center under an unsecured $10,000 bond. They will make a first court appearance on Friday 2:30 p.m. in the Detention Center courtroom.
