This Kid Rocks: Jessica Ekstrom, founder, Headwear of Hope

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

We first introduced you to Jessica Ekstrom last year when we went along to distribute her "Headbands of Hope" to young girls receiving cancer treatments at the N.C. Children's Hospital. Ekstrom just recently expanded her nonprofit.

Ekstrom is known to have a smile and a sense of humor that brings a ray of sunshine to any room, even ones filled with kids and their families dealing with some pretty tough medical situations.

That's just why she wanted to make sure she wasn't leaving anyone out.

"I didn't want to have to pass by any room and even though hair loss might be more traumatic for a girl it's still something that the boys are going through," she says.

The 22-year-old founder of Headbands of Hope says hair loss can be tough for anyone, girls or boys, but that you don't need hair to be who you are. Ekstrom believes it's what's on the inside that really counts.

"It's a symbol of strength and it's a symbol of unity among all the kids that are battling cancer," she says.

Ekstrom has expanded her nonprofit and started "Headwear of Hope," meant to provide young boys receiving cancer treatments with hats and headwear.

Ekstrom says there's a very specific mission with Headbands of Hope and her new nonprofit, Headwear of Hope.

"When you look in the mirror and it's something that boosts your spirits, that's the mission of what we do."

If you want to get involved in either program, Ekstrom is always accepting donations. You can check out both Headbands of Hope and Headwear of Hope by clicking the links.
