Dozens charged following 3-month drug operation in Durham

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Durham Police and the Durham County District Attorney's Office recently completed a three-month drug market intervention operation, which resulted in arrest warrants for 21 people.

The undercover operation targeted street-level drug dealers and drug houses. Officers arrested violent offenders and those with a previous felony drug conviction.

Seven non-violent offenders with no prior felony drug convictions participated in a "call in" on Sept. 27 where they were put on notice. Those seven people were warned that if they get arrested on any felony or serious misdemeanor charge in the next year, the charges against them from the drug market intervention operation will be activated and they will be arrested. The charges from the operation will eventually be dropped if they do not get arrested for one year. In addition, the seven "call in" participants were directed to resources to help them with issues such as addiction, jobs and education.

"We realize that some people make poor choices but have not shown a substantial pattern of criminal activity. This organization sees value in offering them the opportunity to make a life change and avoid a felony charge that could impact their future," said Deputy Chief Larry C. Smith.

Investigators spent three months targeting specific areas and suspects, based on complaints from residents. During the operation, investigators served nine search warrants and confiscated cocaine, heroin, marijuana and pills.
