Task force wants to bring students back to Knightdale schools

KNIGHTDALE, N.C. -

Despite being a part of the Wake County Public School System, the school board has found that Knightdale schools are not up to par educationally compared to the rest of the county.

Two school board members and a district superintendent are joining almost three dozen others on a task force to assess the problems with the public schools in Knightdale.

The public schools in Knightdale have a bad reputation. That perception has been backed up by an audit done by the Wake County Public School System.

"What it showed was schools here don't have the same teacher retention rates and don't have the same resources as other parts of the county," said Knightdale Mayor Russell Killian.

Numbers indicate at least half Knightdale's children do not attend a local public school at the high school or elementary level, and instead are schooled elewhere.

Mellisa Bailey is the parent of a 4-year-old who about to enter school. Bailey plans on avoiding the public schools in Knightdale. "Some of them I'm not fond of. I'm actually looking to put my daughter in Lake Myra. Which is technicality in Wendell because I'm not thrilled with Knightdale elementary schools they have," Bailey said.

Killian said that is precisely why he wants the task force to find solutions.

"Part of the plan needs to come up with action by the school system to recognize the problem and say, 'Here are the six, seven, eights things we need to fix.' And parents hold us accountable for it," Killian said.

Killian wants the task force to come up with a plan by the Spring at the latest.
