This Kid Rocks: Chapel Hill teen creates nonprofit to encourage sick kids

Posted: Updated:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

A Chapel Hill teenager is raising money, and spirits, by help others like her.

Leanne Joyce is a student at Culbreth Middle School.

When she was 11, Joyce was in the hospital for a congenital heart condition. While being treated, Joyce was given an iTunes gift card.

"I received a gift and it made me feel really good about myself and it decreased a lot of my anxiety," said Joyce. "I just felt normal again. And I wanted to give back."

And she did. After researching how to start her own nonprofit, Joyce created "Positive Impact for Kids."

The nonprofit has raised more than $10,000 through private donations, fundraisers and even grants. The money goes towards purchasing iPad minis and gift cards for patients.

"I want to raise $100,000 by my high school graduation. I also want to donate to at least one hospital in every state," said Joyce.

Joyce's nonprofit, "Positive Impact for Kids," is currently in 14 hospitals in 11 states. To learn how you can help, click here.
